We’ve just returned home from a five-day summer conference where we met to listen to God's word and worship in His presence. It was a happy time together with lots of good work done in many lives.
One of the things I loved about the conference was the simple fact that every day we were listening to and thinking about the word of God. It is indeed a great treasure. Where else would we be? I would rather be in church, listening to the Bible, than sitting in front of a screen or wasting hours on social media.
The more we think about the words in the Bible, the more they open up. We begin to discover the depths of the treasures within it. That is when the soul is fed. How profitable to be in a place where not only the word but the presence of God is! Like the Psalmist said:
“A single day in your courts is better than a thousand anywhere else! I would rather be a gatekeeper in the house of my God than live the good life in the homes of the wicked.” Psalms 84:10 NLT
What a blessing it was to be all together in the courts of the Lord. Like the Psalmist, to spend one day at the conference in the presence of God, worshipping with God’s people and listening to part of the Bible being explained is better than a thousand days elsewhere. How precious is the word of God? The Psalmist says he would rather be a doorkeeper than live the good life elsewhere. He recognised the privilege of being in God’s presence and opening the doors for others to enter.
What a privilege is ours to be found at home in His presence. We have come away enriched, blessed and strengthened, knowing that being in God's presence with His people is better than a thousand days elsewhere.
We cannot live at summer conferences all the time. That would not be practical! But we can be in His presence all the time. Let us seek to do this and to bring the right word to others. When He speaks, it fits our needs exactly. Like an arrow that hits its mark or a perfectly fitting glove, the word from God to our souls is exact and perfectly timed. We would do well to listen to it, for it is a great treasure.
