Reading the verses surrounding verse 20, you discover a people who have grown weary with spiritual life. The note of thankfulness for the blessings given seems to have been forgotten. They have brought no offering to God. The verses say the beasts of the fields, the jackals and ostriches will glorify God, for they are grateful for these waters in the wilderness.
Are we grateful for the spiritual waters we receive? Recently whilst on holiday, I found it very difficult to pray. I carefully read my Bible, but it was as if I was disconnected; the words on a page weren’t speaking to me. The weather and scenery were beautiful, so I tried not to let this disconnection disturb me spiritually. I still felt the peace of His presence with me.
On returning home, I again found a full connection in the spiritual world. Even reading the shortest of verses was a feast for my soul. I thanked God for the rest my holiday brought but was even more grateful for the ‘waters’ on returning home.
There could have been several reasons for this seeming disconnection. It could have been due to the people or the place we were staying. Sometimes an area can be spiritually dark, which hinders prayer. There could have been various reasons, but I wouldn’t want to live like that. I waited patiently as I knew it would pass.
However, I know of others who live disconnected all the time. That is normal for them. For them to connect with God is unusual. And yet He has provided water in the most barren places, even the wilderness.
If you find yourself disconnected from the presence of God and are growing weary with spiritual life, don’t accept it! Pray for a breakthrough. Go somewhere where you can find the presence of God. Seek Him and drink from the waters in the wilderness. They are deliciously refreshing for the spirit of man. The Bible describes them as clear as crystal. It will make spiritual life clear and clean. You will never grow weary.
Not only is the water like crystal but on either side of the river there are trees of life. This is where we find the abundant life our Lord Jesus spoke of. He will give life and energy and bring healing where it is needed. We will never grow weary of this!
“And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal … on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.” Revelation 22:1-2 NKJV
